Humane Society of Wilkes Pet Adoption Fair, Saturday, January 10th
HIDEThe Humane Society of Wilkes will hold a Pet Adoption Fair at Church Hardware, 1514 West D Street, North Wilkesboro, Saturday, January 10th, from 12:00 noon until 4:00 pm. Dogs, puppies, cats and kittens will be available for adoption. Adoption fees include vet exam, worming, rabies shot and spay or neuter. HIDE MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Monthly Meeting
The Watauga County Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will hold their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, January 8th at 5:30 pm. The meeting will be held at the Watauga County Law Enforcement Center.
HIDEMADD was formed in an effort to aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims and to increase public awareness of the problem of drinking and drugged driving.

HIDE Watauga County Community Collaborative for Children
The Watauga County Children’s Collaborative will meet on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 9:30 AM. The Watauga Collaborative is a cross agency, family involved committee that is concerned about and committed to the needs of children with mental health, developmental disabilities and substance abuse needs and their families. All of the child and family serving agencies/programs in Watauga County are invited to participate on the Children’s Collaborative. Family members of children with mental health, developmental disabilities and or substance abuse needs who would like to use their personal experiences to improve their community’s system of care for children are encouraged to join the Watauga County Community Collaborative for Children.

Join a Park Ranger at the Visitor’s Center to learn more about New River State Park. Discussion topics will include park accesses, park facilities, fees and what to do while visiting. Program will last approximately 45 minutes.

Come out to the New River State Park Visitor’s Center and learn how to become Jr. Rangers. Meet with a Park Ranger and tour the exhibit hall and watch a short film. Program will last approximately 40 minutes and is free, open to the general public.

The Watauga County Cooperative Extension Service is now taking applications for the 2009 Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program. The Master Gardener Program is designed for anyone interested in horticulture topics, from the beginner to the expert. The extensive training involves 12 weeks of instruction, to be followed by a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer service by program trainees.
HIDEThe program series will be held on Tuesday mornings at the Agricultural Conference Center in Boone, beginning on March 3 and ending May 22, 2009. Classes will meet from 9AM to 12PM The cost of the class is $85 and includes an extensive instruction manual. Home gardening and landscape topics are emphasized, including: plant propagation, soils and fertility, insect and disease pests and sustainable controls, and many others.
Applications can be picked up at the Watauga Extension Center, located at 971 West King Street in Boone or you can print an application from our website, http://watauga.ces.ncsu.edu. High Country photography competition attracts entries from across the country and highlights the unique people, places and pursuits of the Southern Appalachian Region.
HIDESubmissions are being accepted for the 6th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition through Saturday, January 24 at 5pm.
The Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition offers seven separate categories for submissions including two sponsored by the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. A panel of professional photographers are tasked with reviewing all entries and narrowing them down to approximately forty-six that will hang in exhibition at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, March 6 through June 6, 2009.
